Background

As we approach the future of driving, the direction pushed by many visionaries is a fully autonomous driving experience. Autonomous driving however is usually categorized into 5 levels (6 if you count level 0). My research looks into a co-design session on the autonomous driving experience of the future but not many people are even aware of the different levels and its nuances. This is a prototype of an educational booklet that has an additional level of interactivity and engagement with augmented reality (via a smartphone app) to educate participants for the research session.

*Note that the images created for the book are not mine and the purpose of this is solely educational*

The current digital age of work has given birth to new work cultures, laptops have replaced the work tools of old. Unfortunately the strength of the laptop, being compact, has also left a downside to its design that has remained to this day; its limited viewing screen height. This constraint forces users into uncomfortable positions, usually hunching forward just to get a good view of the screen.

To add to the problem, people are spending more time at work on their laptops which leads to muscle aches and even posture problems. Just like a rubber band, the human muscle needs to be allowed time to “spring back” or recover. Constant strain will tire and weaken it. Orthopedists warn that the current increase of people with kyphosis, the medical term for a curved spine, may be linked to this current work trend.

Booklet Design

AR_Book

A simple small square booklet was designed for participants to take home or explore during research sessions. On its own the booklet has sufficient information to get a basic grasp of understanding the differences between the 5 different levels of autonomous driving.

A informational illustration of the specific distinctions of the particular level of autonomy is present on each page (See highlighted area on image). These pages can be scanned with an AR app where an interaction gives the participants a better understanding of the level.

AR App Interaction

Sequence 10_2

1

Scan a page corresponding to the level from 0 to 5 (The demo app only has 0 and 5)

Sequence 10

2

Interactions on the app represent real life actions for driving.

Sequence 10_1

3

Each level has its own level of interaction that coincides with that level of autonomy.

Please contact me if you are interested in trying out a demo.
