Overview

The Problem

There are UX research methods that are very resource-heavy and difficult to accomplish in the real-world based on constraints. They are essential in connecting and understanding the user experience but end up being looked over due to the challenges.

Goal

Create innovative new UX research methods that can enhance and empower users and stakeholders to share valuable insights while still meeting real-world requirements.

Approach

Plan, develop and design methods combining immersive technologies (AR & VR) that reduces researcher pain points and enhances research with participants.

Methods & Tools

UX research (mixed methods), Generative Design research, Co-creation, Unity development (AR & VR)

Time

18 months (2019 - 2020)

Goal

Reduce posture problems when working on laptops.

Approach

Design a product that enhances laptop viewing angles while encouraging healthy work habits for the body.

Methods & Tools

UX & Human-factors research, Ethnography, User testing, Rapid Prototyping, Concept generation, 3D Cad design, Visual branding

Background

A big part of design research today focuses on the human experience as the core of the design process. To better understand human experiences, design researchers have adopted the approach of co-design /participatory design. Tools and techniques have been designed to allow for stakeholders in the co-design process to tap into their creative mindset and engage them in making, telling and/or enacting such experiences.

Extended Reality (XR) mediums such as Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) bring about new levels of engagement and creativity that allow participants to share what exists in their imagination. This gives design researchers a better insight into human experiences that would have been impossible or difficult previously. This exhibition is a demonstration, showing the comparisons and allowing a hands-on for the XR mediums versus some of the current physical analog methods.
